…a Kickstarted interactive adventure!
Around the middle of 2012 Ben was nosing around the internet and came across a reddit post about a gamebook that was looking for funding through Kickstarter. The concept of the book sounded amazing and not only that but the book was being written and designed by non other than Zach Weinersmith, author and cartoonist of the popular web-comic, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal! Cue a flurry of emails from Neil and a few weeks later we were negotiating the app rights to Trial of the Clone! The Kickstarter went on to receive over $130,000 worth of pledges for a campaign that was originally set at $15k, which says a lot about the popularity of this project and why we’re so excited to have signed the deal and are now working with Zach and his team in bringing his gamebook to digital platforms.
We asked Zach if he would provide us with some information about himself (if you’ve not read his SMBC comics, you really should!), where his gamebook passions come from and a little bit about what Trial of the Clone is about. He duly obliged us with a video! Over to you Zach… 😀
You are a clone raised by the mysterious Silene Monks. Once the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, they have long since been superseded by modern technology. Now they spend most of their time haning out and playing video games.
But you are not like the rest of your clone brothers. You have been chosen for a special destiny. Make the right decisions and you’ll complete your training, explore a universe full of adventure, and prove yourself a hero. Make wrong decisions and you’ll be dead. Really dead. It’s hard to emphasize just how dead you will be. So here’s a pro tip for you: try to make the right decisions!
Here at Tin Man Games we obviously have a love for gamebooks and a lot of nostalgic passion and respect for old gamebook series (some of which we are even getting to publish ourselves!) But what excites us about Trial of the Clone is that Zach is taking cues from gamebooks of old to create something brand new. For that reason it’s a really great gamebook project to get our teeth into!
That’s not only why we’re excited though as Trial of the Clone will be combining a digital gamebook and an audiobook to create a new audiogamebook experience! We’d need someone pretty special to christen this new hybrid of interactive fiction and the spoken word, so Zach and his team have hired the perfect someone to narrate his fantastically geeky tale…Wil Wheaton!
Trial of the Clone will be available around Q2 of 2013 for a range of digital platforms!
